Sad News For Hot Club

After over a year of trying and a couple of dead-ends our full-time space has been promised to someone else. I have spent the last three months preparing, and investing this this space, and the last two years scratching out enough money of the 3 nights a week we do have that this is the death blow for Hot Club.

All classes, and dances will be suspended starting immediately, and will be suspended indefinitely. There will be a lot of mess to clean up, so be patient if you’ve already paid for a Groupon or an ongoing class, I will make due on them.

It is with a heavy heart that I announce this, as making dance a part of the fabric of my community has been the center of my life for the past 3+ years. And it is sad to see this progress destroyed so fast.

A Message To April Groupon Buyers(and everyone else)

Welcome!

You see this site? This site is a little out of date. Hot Club is in the middle of a big transition and we hope that you will join us. We are moving from being a very part-time swing only dance studio to a full time partnered dance studio. We will be offering classes in Swing, Salsa, West Coast, Blues and others in the next few months. They will be on weekdays, on weekends and all the beginner level classes will be open for you grouponers.

The only problem is that this Groupon deal is happening a bit early for us (the new space is not quite ready) so we ask you to be calm, and take a deep breath. This is the only time that Groupon had open, and we wanted to make sure that we got a deal out there. We really want you to dance with us and you will be able to do so soon. The calender will be updated ASAP with all the awesome classes that you can take with us.

I can’t wait to see all of your faces on the dance floor in a week or two!

Keenan McKenzie Quintet on 03/29

The Band -

The Keenan McKenzie Quintet is composed of some of the finest new talent in the Carolinas. These musicians have shared the stage with world-renowned artists like Delfeayo Marsalis, Natalie Cole, Lee Konitz, and Max Weinberg, and have appeared in venues such as the Lincoln Center in New York and the House of Blues in New Orleans. Specializing in classic jazz, the versatile group plays everything from early New Orleans tunes to swingin’ standards from the 50′s and 60′s. The quintet features Keenan McKenzie on saxophone/clarinet, Joseph Dickey on bass, Meggan Farish on vocals, Daniel Faust on drums, and Andrew Shillito on guitar.

The Trotter Building is ideally situated in the heart of Downtown Durham’s “DIY District.” There are drinking, and eating establishments a-plenty, some of them mobile!

Description:

The Class (Beginner-Intermediate Salsa)

This class will be held on Wednesdays at 8pm in April. This class is open to people with some salsa experience and will appeal to a large range of levels from beginners who’ve only taken a class or two to more intermediate or advanced dancers who’ve been doing it a while.

The Instructors

Natalia Weedy and Carlos Reyes.

Natalia has been dancing NY Style salsa since 2004 and teaching it since 2005. She has extensive experience in social dance, performance, instruction and choreography.

She’s taught Salsa on 1 and 2, Bachata, and other latin dances at the Red Room in Raleigh, Carmen’s Cuban Cafe, Barriskill Dance Studio, and at Mosaic.

The Class

Are you looking for something a little more refined and educated in your swing dance life? Well, then take your dancing to college and learn the most important lesson that anyone learns in college… how to shag (get your mind out of the gutter, it’s a dance and it’s not that hot of a club). Collegiate Shag is a fun, bouncy, and energetic dance from the jazz/swing era. It’s not to be confused with Carolina Shag which generally involves smooth moves, cigarettes and beer. Check out what you’ll be learning.

The Instructors

John Rowe

John Rowe’s dancing addiction started out as a blind date eleven years ago. The date turned out to be a dud but he stuck around for more dancing. After getting a handle on East Coast Swing and Lindy, John turned his attention to a dance that fascinated him–Collegiate Shag. He began taking lessons from anyone who would teach him and then he bought all the Shag videos he could find.

Margaret Valyou

Margaret Valyou started dancing as a toddler taking ballet and tap. Her skills took her all the way to being a professional dancer with a modern dance company in New York. Margaret started swing dancing about nine years ago and was immediately hooked. Her classical training allows her to pick up and teach dance moves easily.

Make it Pop

Dean Collins and Jewel McGowen were often called the Fred and Ginger of Lindy Hop. The reason they were so sought-after for films, and by Lindy Hoppers past and present is because they, like no other couple, made it pop. This 4-week lesson will teach you how to make it pop by giving reviewing fundamental technique, working on movements quality, and learning new moves all with a focus on how these masters made it happen.

Abigail Browning

With swivels and and grace that rival Jewel herself, we are luck to have Abigail so close by to teach. She is a nationally renowned instructor, DJ, and just all-around great person. we’ve been lucky to have her teach with us a couple of times already and we are really looking forward to having her teach us to dance like Jewel.

When Abigail isn’t teaching, or DJing, she can be found on the dance floor at Hot Club almost every Thursday. She is well known for being friendly, approachable, and dancing with anyone and everyone.

Adam Speen

Adam is an avid Lindy Hop and Balboa dancer, and international instructor. Adam has taught for us, with Abigail, several times and also teaches with his regular partner Nelle Cherry. Adam is an amazing instructor, but will also be seen on the dance floor, rarely sitting out a song. We are looking forward to having him teach us how to move like Dean.

Prerequisites

A solid foundation in 8-count Lindy Hop patterns. If you’ve been through both Lindy 1 and 2 at Hot Club you’ll be fine. If you’re familiar and comfortable with swing-outs, circles, inside outside turn and have a basic understanding of Lindy technique this class is for you.

If you are more advanced and want to learn a new way to move and connect in Lindy Hop, then this Class is for you.

Payment

You can preregister at a discount ($40 for four classes/$32 students) or you can drop in on any of the classes ($12 per class/$10 students).

You’re payment includes admission to the Hot Club dance that night.*

*on February 23 we will be hosting Rent Party and the premier of the Mint Julep Jazz Band. Admission to this is not included in your class price

How to Redeem Your Living Social Voucher

So, you’ve purchased one or more of our lovely Living Social offers, and you want to know what to do next? Well, you’ve come to the right place, assuming that you are here for the swing dance offer.

Important Details:

Each Living Social voucher is good for one person, for one Beginner Series (6 weeks long) if you would like to bring a significant other or friend with you please purchase a separate voucher for each person.
Please give us some time. We will open up more classes, and we will enable on-line registration, it just takes a while.

Here’s what to do:

1) Purchase a Living Social Voucher (you can buy them as gifts too)

2) Determine what class you would like to take. Go here to check out our upcoming classes and read descriptions of the dances that we offer.

3) Register for you class/classes online and enter your voucher number in the appropriate field (it currently asks for a groupon code but your living social voucher number will work as well).

4) Psych yourself up for your class, and bring your printout to your first class.

5) Feel a sense of self accomplishment, because in 6 weeks you will know how to Dance!
