A Brief History of the Club That is Hot
Hot Club of Durham was conceived in an August 2008 fever dream by several ragtag youths known in the area for their strange tendency to gyrate in unison whenever they hear jazz music. They decided to hide their infirmity by calling it “swing dance” and teaching others to replicate the strange behavior. Hot Club of Durham is where these “Jitterbugs” hold their regular meetings and express their “condition.”
Hot Club of Durham is run by a small group of dedicated swing dancers who started off as volunteers. We decided early on that this organization should be community oriented and work to further both the dance and general communities. For much of our first year, Hot Club donated a portion of its proceeds to many local organizations such as SEEDS, Durham Literacy Center, Durham Food Bank, Community in Schools, and others.
After 2 years running Must Dance Swing classes, Rebecca and the gang (ie Joe and Nicole) consented to merging organizations. Now we run weekly Thursday night swing dances AND classes Tuesday-Thursday. Supporting the community is still a focus, while our goal is world takeover by lindy hop by the year 2012.
